HOW WE GOT HERE
Socialites was founded in 2010 by digital marketer Wendy Thompson. Prior to Socialites, Wendy spent ten years with New Zealand’s leading advertising agencies (DDB, TBWA Whybins) as a digital specialist. Wendy saw the power of online communities and wanted to help businesses unlock this mighty and untapped opportunity.
Starting with clients like Annabel Langbein and Kings Plant Barn, Socialites grew organically over the next few years. A key moment was being asked to help New Zealand’s largest telco, Telecom, rebrand to Spark. Just three weeks out from launch with no existing strategy, a cross-platform plan was created and executed rapidly and successfully. As part of this Socialites became the first agency to launch a corporate onto Snapchat, the platform where the younger audience Spark was wanting to connect with. The impressive results included a NPS 9 point increase.
Over the years Socialites helped many iconic companies like Mitre 10, House of Travel and Auckland Airport take their first steps into social media. As social media platforms grew and evolved, thumb-stopping creative has become more dynamic and the growing specialist skillset of Socialites has become what sets us apart from traditional and generalist agencies. The team continue to push the boat out creatively and have a keen eye on the Metaverse and how to build and manage communities in Web 3.
In 2020 digital media audiences overtook traditional media and Socialites’ growth exploded. Socialites also acquired leading Australasian influencer agency The Social Club. This strengthened the agency’s offering, and added a database of over 7,000 professional influencers and talented content creators to the Group.
Now managing millions of fans for our exceptional clients, we still pride ourselves on building fiercely loyal brand communities which leads to powerful commercial outcomes. The tools and platforms have changed over the years but the mission is the same. We are passionately social-focused but we also take the business of business seriously.
